Sports questions that I’ve thought about recently

October 24th, 2008 by admin

There really hasn’t been much going on in the world of sports that would inspire me to write a full post on them, so to shake off some rust, I’ll just run off some questions that have eaten at my mind recently:

1. Can the Lions go 0-16!: The short answer is “yes”. Their schedule (including home games with the Redskins, Titans, Bucs, Saints, Jaguars and Vikings that I, unfortunately, have tickets for) is brutal, and they have little left to play for; the coach is a goner, the GM is already gone, and many players may not be here in 2009. And I say “Please tank this year!”, if only for a few laughs.

2. Was yesterday’s Lakers/Bobcats preseason game really bad, or was it me?: Maybe it was good Kobe sat out with his knee injury; that game was disgusting to watch. Fortunately, it’s only preseason, but I think that all sports leagues should reduce preseason games and rates charged, so that fans who normally can’t afford it can go to a game.

3. Has anybody else gotten tired of the Cowboys-palooza?: First, it was perennial troublemaker TO. Then, it was perennial troublemaker Pacman. Then, it was the non-stop Tony Romo injury coverage. Then, it was the “should Wade go?” shit. Now, it’s Wade taking over as defensive playcaller. Enough, already!

4. Speaking of, what about Brady?: I heard so much about Brady’s complications from his ACL surgery, that I think I could perform the surgery myself! Look, I know Brady has won three Super Bowl and dates a supermodel, but that doesn’t mean I need to know every angle about his surgery. Enough!

5. Is Manny Ramirez worth $27.5 million?: No. Nobody really is. Only in baseball can we discuss this with a straight face, and Manny wants six years, which would make him 42 when the deal ends. Um, Manny, you better settle for three years max, because you won’t be productive at 42.

6. Will I win in any of my fantasy basketball leagues?: Of course I will! If you go into a fantasy league thinking you’ll fail, you’ll, well, fail. Look out to all three leagues!

Well, that’s it for the questions! Hopefully, I have some material after I attend the Lions/Redskins bloodletting, er, game! Take care!

Random Sports Thoughts

October 17th, 2008 by admin

Yes, it’s finally here! The segment that has won awards for… oops, that’s not it! Oh well, this may not have won awards, but here is my first installment on this site of one of my favorites, Random Sports Thoughts!

The Red Sox came back from 7-0 down to win 8-7. Is it really a surprise? After all, the Tampa bullpen got their tips to pitch from the Tigers’ pen.

The Phillies now must wait longer to find out their opponent. But they’ve been waiting 25 years for another title there, so I think they can wait a little longer.

Speaking of which; can Philly really complain? 25 years is nothing compared to the Cubs’ 100 year dry spell. If Philly’s run is a ‘drought’, then the Cubs’ one is ‘prohibition’.

There was a topic on PTI yesterday wondering if NBA players would jump to Europe. Who wouldn’t? After all, I’d rather win a title with Olympiakos than in the NB… what the fuck am I saying!? It’s bull, and that’s that!

Jon Kitna told WJR radio in Detroit that the Lions used his back injury as an excuse to put him on IR. Moments later, he threw another INT.

Speaking of the Lions; nice to see Martin Mayhew trying to clean house. I can’t wait for the next 51 year rebuilding plan.

The Chicago Blackhawks fired coach Denis Savard four games into the regular season. Now, if only the Lions did that to Marinelli…

The Red Wings are 2-2. It’s time to… cool the jets. It’s only four frickin’ games into the season, you damn loonies!

The MLB players union said that the teams colluded against Barry Bonds this season. Why? After all, Bonds is such a great teammate…

Hank Steinbrenner says Joba Chamberlain will be a starter in 2009. They should change his name to “Yo-Yo” Chamberlain.

Pacman Jones got in trouble again. Next question, please…

Troy Polamalu says the NFL fining Hines Ward has turned the league into a ‘pansy game’. In related news, expect a fine, Troy.

Gotta love the TBS baseball crew of Chip Caray, Buck Martinez and Ron Santo. Or, as I now call them, “the Obvious Police”! Tell me something I DON’T know, guys! Damn, I know that fouling off pitches is a good thing for the hitter!

Finally: I’m working on building a webpage dedicated to the NBA and its history. As long as I spend no more than fifty cents, it should be up soon.

Well, that’s all the random thoughts for today. Take care, and expectant moms, here’s a bit of adivce; don’t let your babies grow up to be Rod Marinelli! See ya!

Time for a real post: Time for L-Rod to Go!

October 8th, 2008 by admin

O.K. I had a warm-up yesterday with my first post, now it’s time to talk sports. And, in my sports life, the team I have ridiculed and mocked more than any other team has been the Detroit Lions. The only time they ever get mentioned in the news is if they say something completely stupid or something that makes you say “Damn; he CAN’T be serious!”. And Monday, coach Rod Marinelli continued in that tradition by saying, point blank, that he wouldn’t quit. My question is “Why the hell not?”!

You see, I really don’t believe in Marinelli’s ability to lead a team as a head coach. He was very good as the Bucs’ D-line coach, tutoring Warren Sapp and Co. to a Super Bowl win. As the head coach of the Lions, however, he has been as successful as Bush’s war policies. I consider him to be a coward who opts always for the safe, conservative shit (I’m sorry, he gets me that way) that rarely works. I firmly believe he’d punt on 4th and goal from the 1! And yet he says he won’t quit. The signs are obvious to why he SHOULD quit.

The kicker is that I think the team has tuned him out. Marinelli is always making the same bland, boring-ass speech; essentially, he says “We just have to practice harder and work better to win”. After hearing that repetitive speech fifty times, I’d tune him out, too! When you lose the team, you have to work hard to get them back, but you really have to win. And Marinelli just doesn’t have that will to win that the great coaches like Parcells and Walsh had. And don’t give me that bull about he doesn’t have talent; he could have the 1972 Dolphins and lose 10+ games! He just isn’t good, period!

So, in summation, Marinelli needs to be ‘persuaded’ to resign, or William Clay Ford needs to show some backbone and fire him. The Lions need to completely start over and build this team back up. Because another year of “We just need to practice harder and work better” will be the permanent death knell of this sorry team.

The New Frontier, part two

Let’s try this again, now that I have my own blog finally! Here goes: it’s great to be starting a new blog here, and I’m excited to write for this site! I assure you that this won’t be much different from my previous work, and that the same fun and sarcasm will be readily available. Starting tomorrow, I’ll start writng actual sports stories, starting with my beloved Losers, er, Lions! Until then, mothers, a bit of advice; don’t let your babies grow up to be Matt Millen or Rod Marinelli!
